The trial / inaugural season of the Brown Street Cornhole league is drawing to a close.  Here's what we have on the horizon.

Tuesday, July 23.  Week 4 matches at the Crestwood Cornhole Stadium.

Tuesday, July 30. Open week. There are no official matches scheduled, but players are encouraged to play in some friendly pick up matches, practice sessions, or tournament tune ups.  This will take place at the Brown Street Cornhole Complex.

Tuesday, August 6. Week 5 matches & individual tournament.  Format has not yet been set for this, but I'm pretty sure we'll be at Brown St. Cornhole Complex for this culminating event of the season.

If we had a good time this season, and we think we'd like to move forward with a follow up season, then the feedback we get from the season evaluation will be very valuable to setting up season 2.

Season Standings after week 3

We have a new league leader my friends.  The Pipes passed the Bras this week.  They now have the same record, but the Pipes have a larger bag differential, so they're our new leaders.

The individual stats have shuffled around a bit this week.  Nalylee over took Balsley to move in to second place.  Billy skyrocketed in to 4th place.  Things is gettin' heated up now.

Billy was a little cornhole slut this week, pulling down 4 games and 4 wins.

Happy third Anniversary to KC & Sunshine!  Yay!

The original plan for this week was to nave been the Keystone L.P. host in Meridian Hill Park.  It turns out that place closes at dark and is full of park police enforcing both that and the no alcohol rules.  Probably other things too.

The Diplomats from the Pipeline petitioned the Pathfinders to see if they could host Week three at the Brown Street Cornhole Complex.  A magnanimous Pathfinder granted them that right.

We might have higher numbers this week if people spread the word of mouth and invite friends.  The people who show up who are not yet placed on a team should be placed at the discretion of the captains who are present.

Croom Invitational Results. (July 13, 2013 - Canoe Camp, Upper Marlboro, MD

Big shout out to all the players and fans who came out to the Croom Invitational on Saturday.  It was a great day and despite the cancellation of the tournament part of the invitational due to weather, the first two rounds went really well.  Nobody got shut out, so nobody had to run around the block naked.  There were a few close calls, prompting Fremont to exclaim (to the tune of Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take It!)

"We're Not Runnin' Naked.  No! We're not Runnin' Naked. We're not Runnin Naked Anymore!"

Round 1 of the Croom invitational was regulation League play.  This was to highlight and showcase the Brown Street Cornhole League and the services we provide to the community.

It was all Bras with the Kendallabras going 3 and 0.  Just like they did in week 2.  On top of that, all of the tossers for the Bras finished tied for first in the individual standings.  One disappointed opponent was heard to say "Fuckin' Ken Dolls man.  Wait, what are they called?"  Fuckin' Ken Dolls indeed.  

 The Pipes, Flares, and Finders all went 1 - 3, but the bag differential put the Keystone L.P. in second, Pathfinders in third, and the galaxy's favorite team, the Solar Flares, in fourth place.

Round two of the Croom Invitational was the seeding round.  We had 6 teams playing little round robins on two sets of boards.  On the DC boards The team hereby to be called "Efficiency" in order to make their name reflect the way we play  went 2 - 0 The Oldtimers went 1 - 1, and the GuapoRenos got the bronze with a 2 - 0 record.  On the Blue Boards, the C.H.A.D.S. went 2 - 0, KC & Sunshine split sets with a 1 - 1, and PBR chucked up a goose egg, falling 0 - 2.  Billy blamed the anchor he was dragging.

Round 3 was to have been the Double elimination tournament using the rankings from round two for bracket seeding.   It would have been awesome too.  Hindsight seems to indicate that perhaps our mistake was when we took like three hours off.  In that time we had dinner and did some great camping and then we got to hunker down in a hobo village to battle a fierce line of thunder storms and coastal floods, and emergency alerts.  Despite these hardships, no invitational guest faced a beer shortage.  So it was kind of a victory.  It is possible that drinking our way safely through the storm led to a lack of motivation or coordination to set the boards back up to run the tournament.  We'll never know. At any rate, take a look at what it would have been like.

We're all new this week.

New Bags!  We've got 16 new bags in 4 exciting colors.  100 weight Duck Cloth, Real Corn.  We'll have to break them in.

New Boards!  Not exactly new boards.  Keith built them a long time ago, but never got around to finishing them.  Sunshine has put in some time on them and we're proud to announce the premire of the new Cap City boards.

The new boards and the new bags will likely play a little sticky until they're broken in.  Experts are predicting high scores this week.

New Venue!  One of the things we're experimenting with in this league is moving the games around.  Each Team has a home court and we rotate to each location to make it equitable for all parties.

This week we'll be playing at the Flare's home court in the lawn behind the Crestwood.  The Crestwood's address is 3900 16th St. However, you do not need to go into the building.  We'll be out back in the lot located at the intersection of Shepard St & 17th St.

The hosts will provide a 12 of bud cans, some solo cups and coolers with ice.  If you want anything other than that, you'll have to bring it yourself.  Consider bringing a folding chair to sit in, as it is pretty primative back there.

Suggestion Box

At the inaugural session of the Brown St. Cornhole League, all eyes were on the future with suggestions on how to improve the league for the next season.  This optimism is encouraging.  Suggestions made during week 1 are below.  If you have any more great ideas, post them in the comments.

Balsley:  "I don't get the tie rule.  Only one team can score at a time. There can be no ties"

League: We shall revise the rulebook as follows:  Ties are forbidden.  Any player in a tie will be escorted from the premises by event security.  That should clear everything up.  

Various Ballers: "Sunshine stacked his team.  It is unfair how the teams were made.  There is no accountability." (shout out to the GAO folks ;) 

Sunshine's thoughts: "you don't like it, you make your own league and stack your own team"

League: Perhaps we make team selection more of a transparent process that all can participate in.   Suggestions include somehow using the individual statistics to assist in team making.  Like maybe the 4 highest ranked tossers become next season's captains and we hold a draft.  Or like number one & Number fourteen get paired up, and two & 13, and so on.  Good suggestions all.  

Sunshine: "I'm embarrassed by these bags.  Where are the good bags? Why isn't there a decent set of bags for this league?"

League: one word - Sponsorships.

Nalylee: "21!  21! freaking mosquito bites!  I counted them.  I am going to be the commissioner of bug spray for this league.  I swear to god."  

League: Without objection, the motion passes.  Fremont has a costco membership, and I think he's got smart car2go membership too.  He could be an ally Ms. Commissioner.

Mack: "It'd be great if we could keep really really detailed stats on each player."

League: and then start a black market cornhole league fantasy league.  I'm down with that. 

KC: "All the couples are placed on the same team so they can never stand on the same end." Is this a nice way of saying that you don't want to be on your husband's team? 

League: It's not never, there are scenarios when teammates / couples could face each other as opponents and stand alongside each other to hold hands or make out or whatever. For example, if both folks were stepping to represent different teams in a match that doesn't involve their home team, then they could do that.  Also, once official matches are completed for the evening, all spouses, lovers, domestic partners and mistress-slave arrangements are free to form any pairings for recreational games.  

League Rules.

We've been thinking about how this is going to look and work.  The idea is that this July, we do a trial run at putting our own cornhole league together.  If we like it, we expand and improve.  If we don't like it... then we'll have only wasted like 4 or 5 Tuesday nights in the summer.  But I'd like to see it through to the end in this format... unless you're outraged by something stated here.

In recreation school, you learn that if you are organizing a thing, you should set up your rules ahead of time.  These are those rules.  Again, if you don't like them, please post a comment, or write it down so that when we are at the end of the season in August, we can see what worked and what didn't.

Game Rules

• Standard distance - 40ft, or 1 rope length (if the boards are Keith brand and have the distance already marked out)  You can thrown from any point behind the line formed by the front of the board. 

• You must occupy the same side of the board as your partner.  This means each team will have one player with their right arm over the boards, and one team member with their right arm on the outside.

 

• A bag that lands on the board earns one point.  A bag that goes in the hole earns 3 points.  The team with the most points in a round will add the balance of the points from that round to their total score.

• The first team to end a round with 21 or more total points will win that match.  If both teams finish a round with 21 points, a sudden death play off will follow.  The first team to end a round with an advantage will win. 

• Throwing techniques are left up to the individual thrower.  

League scoring

• The league will maintain 4 teams.  Each team will have a captain.  It is the responsibility of each captain to insure that at least two people show up to represent their team each game night.  

• Team stats & individual stats will be kept throughout the season.  

• Team Stats & Standings.  Each week, each team will have an official match against each of the three other teams.  

• Team scores will be tracked in an aggregate points manner.  All points earned in official matches will go towards the team's season points total.  

Individual Scoring

• Individual tossers will receive  +1 point  for participating on a two thrower team that wins an official game.  (regardless of what team they are representing at the time of the win)

• Individual tossers will receive -1 point for participating on a two thrower team that loses an official game.  (Regardless of what team they are representing at the time of the loss)   

• Individuals who throw in a game with more than two members tossing bags on their team, will receive a proportional number of points.  (3 tossers, each gets 2/3 points.  4 tossers, each gets 1/2 a point. and so on.)

Team mobility

• Since this league is informal and nobody has paid in for anything, the possibility exists that participant buy in will be low, or will wane throughout the life of the league.  To insure that each team will have players playing for it, we will implement a representation model.  Each team needs to be represented in each of their official matches. 

• Each player will have a home team.  That is the team they are assigned to originally.  If a player shows up one week and they are not already on a home team, they will be added to one of the captain's roster where they will remain for the rest of the season.  

• If a team is unable to muster the minimum number of players to participate in a given week, any tosser present may step in and represent that team for a game as needed.  

• A player can play for any team as a guest tosser, however, a player can not toss against their home team in an official match.

 

New Logo!

On what appears to be the back of a bar receipt, our league's resident artist, Chris Forney has given us the new Brown St. Cornhole League logo.  You probably recognize it from the league's blogger site.

It's one of the neighborhood bad dogs, "marking his turf".  Don't like it?

Teaming Up

The Voltroning of the Brown Street Ballers should result in balanced squads to compete against each other for fun and glory.  If four teams can be established, then we can have each team face off against each of the other teams each night of the league.  It'll be awesome.

The idea of having captains is that they will insure that they have people show up to throw for their team.  Since the number of people involved is going to be fairly low, this gives the captains the responsibility of bringing in their own free agents as needed.  That's like getting a people to do your recruiting for you.

In addition to tracking the wins and losses of each team, it would be great to also keep stats on each tosser in the league.  As things develop, the data tracking system will be set up and shared out to all interested parties

The question to respond to here is, what do you think about the idea of having four teams in the league?

Proposed Rules & Structure

This league will try to be flexible to allow for the possibility that folks can't make it every week.  We'd like to encourage lasting teams, but also remain open to switching partners around if need be to allow flexibility.

Teams will be made up of just two partners.  However, an individual can be a part of limited number of pairings.  Records will be kept for each team, and for each individual tosser.  Maybe by crunching the numbers, we'll figure out something to help set up the end of season tournament.

We'll play following regular recreational rules.  Games will end at 21 points.  Not 16 ends as they do in United Social Sports.

The mini season will be Tuesdays in July, plus a playoff tournament during the first Tuesday in August.  Each of the weeks will see games played at a different venue with a refreshment plan for when the games are over.  The proposed schedule has Tuesday as the night that we'll  play games.

Brown Street Ballers Break Up.

The world renowned Cornhole competitive demonstration squad, The Brown Street Ballers have decided to break up the team.  After wowing spectators and opponents alike in the United Social Sports leagues, the famed ambassadors of the game have decided to break apart like Voltron after slaying the robobeasts.  For the good of the game.

What's next for this intrepid band of cornholing enthusiasts?  The Brown Street Cornhole League of course.

The Ballers have often said there is enough interest in the game among friends who run in the same social circles to support a robust league of cornhole play.  This summer, Brown Street Ballers alumni will organize, plan, and host a short trial season. If the mini season is a success, then we will look at scaling up the league in terms of length of season and number of teams. We could look at trophies & t-shirts and all the other trappings of established and successful social sporting networks.

For now, we have to set up the structure of the league, the rules we'll play by and the schedule. The rough outlines of those things are addressed in subsequent posts  These suggestions are based on conversations had among various Ballers.  Please add your two cents in the comment section.  When we have reached a consensus, we'll move forward with games & tourneys.  

The Question: Would you be able to commit to playing in a cornhole league one night a week for 5 or 6 weeks in July?
